Make room without losing the useful copy
Measure the shortage, choose the right removal action and leave capacity for the next task.
When this route helps
Use this route when storage is tight but you are not sure what can safely go. It begins with measurement because a long list of installed apps can hide the real cause: downloaded video, app documents or a photo library. The goal is enough usable space for a defined task, not the smallest possible storage total.
- 01
Measure before choosing a target
Read the storage breakdown and define the amount of room you actually need. Identify whether the large category is replaceable downloads, personal work or a synchronized library. The result of this step is a shortlist of candidates, not a deletion session.
Before you clear space, know what you’re deletingBefore you move on: You can name the largest relevant category and the task the extra space will support.
- 02
Choose the action with the right scope
Compare installation size with documents and data. Offloading, deleting, removing an icon and removing a cloud download do different jobs. Keep travel and account-access apps available when reinstalling them later would require a connection you may not have.
Offload, delete or remove download? Before you move on: You know what remains after the proposed action and how you would retrieve it.
- 03
Handle the library as a synchronized collection
If photos are the real target, separate disposable images from material worth keeping. Check the effect of library deletion before treating another device as a separate copy. Do a small selection first and inspect the result.
Clean up Photos without losing the wrong copyBefore you move on: The selected removal is intentional across the library, not just on this screen.
- 04
Protect the next task from the cleanup
Download and test the maps you need after making room. Capacity reclaimed for a trip is useful only if the required content is actually present before departure. Revisit the storage estimate after those downloads complete.
Prepare offline Maps for the part of the trip without signalBefore you move on: The needed offline material opens and there is still usable headroom.
Bring the steps together
Use the storage budget tool for a transparent estimate of new photos, video and downloads. Stop cleanup once the task has adequate room; a nearly empty phone is not the objective.
